This charming oil painting by Allen captures the tranquil mood of the northern Italian lakes on a sunny summer day. The lake shown is Como, most popular with British tourists at the turn of the century.

Allen travelled to Italy annually to complete commissions from the Victoria and Albert Museum, Dublin, Preston and Edinburgh Museums, to make architectural sketches of famous Italian palaces. This painting was probably executed while Allen was on honeymoon. Stylistically Allen’s work changes little over the years.
