This painting is part of the founding collection given to the University of Oxford by General Pitt-Rivers in 1884. The scene depicted is probably from a mystical romance or historic epic, which were popular subjects in Persian painting. For a long time this picture, which is painted on a wooden board, was in a gilt frame. When it was selected for a new display in 2008, staff in the Museum’s conservation department took it out of the frame to examine its condition. They discovered that a narrow leather panel was attached to one side of the board, suggesting that originally it was not produced as a picture to hang on the wall, but as a cover for a book or album.
