This painting contains elements of landscape and geology, with a strong allusion to the biological. In the womb-like enclosure a twisting umbilical river flows to a calcite human form, suggesting in an archetypal way the elemental physical nature of the world and the formation of life within, hidden and developing. Here an eternal force is implied within a rounded, protective mandala shape. Shelagh Hourahane’s studies in history and art history in Edinburgh and Cardiff fed her own experimental, explorative work across a wide range of media. She exhibited her paintings and sculptural constructions widely within Wales from the early 1970s. Parallel with this, she helped found the Welsh Sculpture Trust (now Cywaith Cymru/Artworks Wales) and developed its exhibition programme.
