Hugh Miller (1802–1856) was an accomplished stonemason, geologist, theologian, journalist and poet. He discovered the fossil 'Homosteus milleri' (named after him) on the West Shore of Stromness. This discovery led him to write 'Footprints of the Creator' which inspired Charles Darwin to develop his theory of evolution. He was an honorary member of the Orkney Natural History Society.
