This portrait is based on Holbein's images of Henry VIII which dominated both his life and posthumous reputation. In its square pose and in the details of the jewellery, this verison appears to derive from Type IV, also know as the Thyssen portrait, a small work unanimously considered to be from life and the only certain portrait from Holbein's hand. The College version appears to be around 1600.
