Henry VIII (1491–1547) founded the Royal College of Physicians on 23 September 1518 by Royal Charter. His aim was to abolish practitioners from the medical profession who were unlearned and incompetent. The RCP was to serve as a governing body with the authority to punish malpractice offenders with fine and imprisonment. Henry VIII had a deep amateur interest in medicine, and prepared his own remedies. He was petitioned to found the RCP by his personal physician, Thomas Linacre, who became the RCP’s first president.

The numerous portraits of Henry VIII have helped to establish him as one of the most recognisable monarchs in history. This portrait of the King was presented by Dr Goodall to the RCP in 1706, but the date and artist of the work are unknown.
