Henry Cummings (1906–1989) is shown half-length, seated on a wooden armchair with his hands crossed on his lap. A standard lamp with a cream shade is at the rear, with white shelves and a radiator, and a run of turquoise wallpaper. He wears a pale grey blazer, brown trousers and a red tie. A copy of Giuseppe Verdi's 'Requiem' is on a wooden music stand to his right. A baritone, Henry Cummings was a former student and later a distinguished teacher of singing at the Royal Academy of Music.
