The fourth son of Oliver Cromwell, Henry fought in the Civil War, and later became Lord Deputy of Ireland, and Governor General. After the Restoration he was allowed to keep some of his Irish lands. He later retired to Spinney Abbey, near Wicken, Cambridgeshire. He died in 1674 and was buried at Wicken Church.
