Akers Douglas completed a Foundation Course at Camberwell College of Art and has shown in numerous exhibitions and was a finalist in The Hunting Prize exhibition in 2005. He has said about the present work: 'Headlong was undertaken at my studio in Camberwell, and comprises one of several monotone figure studies I made over the Winter of 2007–2008. Kathleen was a student at Camberwell Art College and an extremely patient sitter! Anyway, this upturned, muscular twist of her back appealed to me – reminiscent of Renaissance depictions of the Fall of the Damned. I set up a strong light source to optimise the contrast in tones, and decided on aluminium panel as the painting surface. I use aluminium panels particularly for smaller studies of this sort, because they favour a bold and spontaneous application of paint.
