An architect of fine city churches, Nicholas Hawksmoor (1661–1736) was an indispensable assistant to Sir Christopher Wren. McFayden relegates an example of his work to the very rear of the composition provoking comment as to its importance today. There is a strong juxtaposition between fine architecture and this open wasteland. The composition is dominated by the overbearing stature of the dog. His wide innocent eyes and apparent lack of ownership illustrate the dichotomy between both man’s positive and negative effects in urban life.
