When Richard Beavis lived in Boulogne, France in 1867–1868, he visited Holland and may have been remembering the visit when he painted this coastal scene. In the nineteenth century, fishing fleets were more often beached rather than moored in a harbour as they are today. This painting shows the fishermen and dray horses dragging a boat on to a beach after a fishing trip at sea.
