Three portraits of siblings Duncan, George and Margaret Vertue, painted by William Smellie Watson, were presented to the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh in 1883 to commemorate Dr Vertue’s donation of his estate to the Infirmary. From 1729 until the introduction of the National Health Service on 5 July 1948, the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh had been funded entirely by voluntary charitable subscriptions. Dr Duncan Vertue was probably the greatest of the Infirmary's nineteenth-century benefactors, having bequeathed his entire estate in 1883. His portrait, and those of his brother and sister, are still displayed in the Infirmary now not only to commemorate his particular gift but also all the donors who generously gave to the hospital. Duncan Vertue studied medicine at Edinburgh University between 1813 and 1817, returning for a further year in 1822–23, when he took a course of clinical medicine at the Infirmary and was awarded the Diploma of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
