The sitter was a doctor at the Salisbury Infirmary and one of the founders of the Museum. He purchased the property for the original museum at 40 & 42 St Ann Street and paid for the building to be adapted. In 1862, he donated his library to become the core of the Museum’s reference library. Sadly he did not live to see the Museum completed as he died the following year, at the age of 97.
