This intimate domestic scene is a typical ‘genre painting’ which depicts aspects of everyday life. Domestic life and the role of the family were very important to Victorians – everyone had their place. The birdcage, hanging in front of the window, was a popular symbol in Victorian art. Caged birds represented women, who were expected by society to have no other role beside wife and mother.

Born in Exeter in 1836, Morrish was a London painter of genre, landscapes and portraits. He later moved to Torquay, becoming headmaster of the Art School in the Vivian Institute of Science and Art.
