The elegantly draped body of a dead hare dominates the picture. The artist has deliberately displayed the vulnerable underbelly, which is only visible when the animal is caught and killed, brilliantly observing the dead weight and soft fur. The bowed head of the poppy and the relief on the urn, which depicts an antique sacrifice, emphasize the theme of death.
