This painting is another in the series commissioned by Jaguar's Sales and Marketing Department for a Daimler advertising campaign called 'Masterpieces'. The painter Bryan Organ has adopted a somewhat 'tongue in cheek' approach to the brief. The warden in the painting is John Nesbitt (b.1912) who worked at the National Portrait Gallery and retired when this painting was made.
