D. B. McNeill, a physicist by profession, was educated in Portora Royal School, Enniskillen and at Queen’s, Belfast, where he worked as a demonstrator in physics (1935–1938). Thereafter, he spent his academic career in Southampton University, from which he retired in 1971. A keen oarsman, McNeill began rowing at Portora in 1927, was a founder member of the boat club at Queen’s in 1931 and was captain and president of the boat clubs at Queen’s and Southampton Universities.
