Three children offering a jug of ale to a weary traveller who is sitting on a log, to the left through the cottage door a woman can be seen preparing food. This type of sentimental rustic painting was developed by Collins, a follower of George Morland, and it was very influential throughout the nineteenth century. Collins studied at the Royal Academy Schools and was elected as Royal Academician in 1820. After a visit to Italy in 1836 he tried, unsuccessfully, to make his living as a history painter. 'Cottage Hospitality' was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1834.
