This picture was painted before the installation of La Corbière's lighthouse, which was first lit in 1874. The people standing on the cliff are dwarfed by a vast landscape. In this painting, nature is a powerful force, overwhelming the small human figures. Sarah Kilpack was a regular visitor to Jersey, travelling here by boat, so she would have been well aware of how dangerous this particular coastline was.
