Hambling has produced portraits of a number of other academics including the scientist Professor Dorothy Hodgkins and Professor Robin Matthews, Master of Clare College, Cambridge. In this portrait there are no biographical accessories to identify the sitter. Its restrained shallow space counterpoints the sense of colour.
