This painting depicts Captain Colin Mackenzie, wearing his Royal Navy full dress uniform. Mackenzie was Captain of HMS 'Thunderer', the largest warship ever to be built on the River Thames.

Born in Gairloch in 1872, Colin Mackenzie was the eldest son of Donald Mackenzie, factor for the Gairloch Estate, and joined the Navy as a Cadet in 1885. He became Captain of HMS 'Thunderer' on 1st October 1920.

HMS 'Thunderer' was the third Orion class battleship to be constructed, and the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company which built it declared themselves bankrupt shortly after its completion. It served in the First World War at the Battle of Jutland, but became a cadet training ship in 1922.

The painting is the work of Marcel Hess, a Belgian artist born in Brussels who was known for his portraits.
