London-born Dennis Creffield studied under the expressionist artist David Bomberg at Borough Polytechnic from 1948 to 1951, then at the Slade School of Art, London. In 1961 he won the John Moores Painting Prize at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. On Herbert Read’s recommendation, he then became the Gregory Fellow at Leeds University from 1964 to 1966. He then taught at various art colleges, including those in Leeds and Brighton.
