Boudin painted this view of ships on the Gironde estuary during a stay of six weeks in Bordeaux in late 1874 and early 1875. Shortly afterwards, he wrote, contrasting the noisy quays of Bordeaux with the freshness of the sea, 'These commercial towns are enervating: there is the dust, the dirty leather, the bird-lime over everything, excellent things, after all, but which do not make one forget the wholesome smell of seaweed and which will never replace the freshness of the salty damp of our beaches.'
