Paul Yates was born in Belfast and began writing and painting from an early age encouraged by his then high school English teacher, artist Jack Pakenham. His first solo exhibition was held at the Tom Caldwell Gallery in 1972 when he was just 18 years old, his first London show was held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1976.
