In this painting a small boat ferries a diverse group of people and their animals across a wide river. A focal point is provided in the gentleman attired in a yellow waistcoat mounted on a grey horse and his companion in a red cape. The warm light and extensive landscape, with a wide bridge and ruined gatehouse, evokes Italy. This picture was traditionally associated with Jan Asselyn, one of the foremost Dutch Italianate landscape painters who spent about seven years in Rome. However, scholars now believe that it was painted by Willem Schellinks, Asselyn's closest follower, who also travelled to Italy.
