This dates from the early period of McTaggart’s oeuvre, retaining a refinement of figuration and painterly quality. The paintings are also notable for their gentle pastoral narrative, the anecdotal style a key aspect of work from this period. McTaggart’s early experiments into the effects of light can be noted through the use of the work in series, exploring the differing landscape through the time of day. This emphasis on transience is characteristic of his work, indicative of McTaggart’s employment of ‘en plein aire’ technique.
