Painter of animals and birds who studied at the RSA Schools, gained the Carnegie Travelling Scholarship and went for further studies in Paris. His knowledge of his subjects stemmed from a love of the Scottish countryside, trout and salmon fishing. Was a president of SSA, was also a member of RSA and RSW and showed extensively at Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Arlington Gallery. With his wife Ellen Frew he wrote and illustrated Animals We Know. Polar Bears and Ploughing in Central France were among his main works. Lived in Edinburgh.
