Businessman and painter, born in Manchester of Scottish parents. As a young man he joined the textile merchants Robert Barbour and Brother Ltd, was appointed a director in 1910 and remained on the board until 1942. For several years he was a director of Manchester’s Chamber of Commerce and of Manchester Athenaeum, where he was much interested in its educational work; he served on the Library committee; and in 1938 he received the Heywood Medal for 30 years’ service with Royal Manchester Institution, of which he had been president. Art was Reekie’s principal enthusiasm. When Sickert taught in Manchester in the 1920s he was one of his pupils, and he also studied under one-time president of MAFA Tom Mostyn, himself showing often at the Academy.
