Artist and writer, born in Paris. From 1936–71 he lived in Moscow, then moved to England, settling in southeast London, becoming a full-time artist. Studied at Moscow Art School, 1944–7, from 1949–52 working in the studio of the painter R Falk. He later studied the history of art in India and Southeast Asia and published two books on the subject in 1964–7. Meanwhile he painted, showing twice, at exhibitions of young artists, in 1958–64. Obtained a Gregory Fellowship in Painting at Leeds University, 1972–4, lived in Paris, 1977–8, then after a visit to America’s east coast turned to Constructivist-style sculpture, sometimes painted, using wood, although he finally returned to figurative painting. Prokofiev showed in groups at ICA, Pratt Institute in New York and Institut Audio-Visuel, Paris.
