Painter and teacher, born in South Shields, County Durham, graduating from Armstrong College, Durham University, 1932–6, with her master’s degree, teachers including Robert Lyon. After teaching in Wales, she travelled to Burma during World War II to get married, escaping to India when the Japanese invaded. After the war she settled in South Africa, studying at Johannesburg College of Art, 1949–52, and running a successful art school there. In 1960 she returned to the United Kingdom, continuing to paint pictures “to convey my feelings about people – happy, funny and sometimes sad.” She exhibited internationally, including in her home town of Letchworth, Hertfordshire; Phoenix Gallery, Lavenham; the RA Summer Exhibition, RBA and SWA; and was a member of Free Painters and Sculptors and NS.
