Painter and teacher who studied at Kingston College of Art. He taught at Coventry College of Art, 1964–71, where he was associated with the founder-members of Art & Language. After that he taught at Stourbridge College of Art. Was Gregory Fellow at Leeds University, 1978–80, and taught at Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts. Mitchell was interested in the nature of colour and form and in the way spaces or shapes geometrically identical can deceive the eye by the manner in which they are related on paper or canvas. Arts Council holds such a work: Gate, of 1976. Mitchell was well thought of on the continent, showing often at Galerie Swart, Amsterdam. Had a major one-man show at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, 1987, and was included in the South Bank Centre 1988–9 touring exhibition The Presence of Painting.
