Painter, muralist and draughtsman, educated at New College, Swindon, who did a foundation course at the College of Art there, gaining a fine art degree in Exeter at University of Plymouth faculty of art and education. He won the Tunley Prize for fine art, 1995; Rupert Lionel Acott Prize, for outstanding figure drawing, 1998, and 2nd Prize, BP Portrait Award, National Portrait Gallery, 2000. In 1997, Micallef was commissioned to complete a mural at Alfredo Alfredo Restaurant and Gallery, San Marco, Venice, which also exhibited his work. In 1999, Micallef did a month’s voluntary work teaching portraiture at Covingham Infant School, Swindon. In the same year he had a month’s cultural residency in Japan, sponsored by Woodbine Cottage Gallery, near Spalding, which showed the resulting work in 2000.
