Painter and teacher, born in Bradford. He studied at the College of Art there, 1927–32, with Henry Butler, then at Royal College of Art, 1932–5, with Sir William Rothenstein. Exhibited LG, NEAC, Leicester and Redfern Galleries and in the provinces. Galleries in Manchester and Wakefield hold his work, which was often closely related to architecture and the landscape. Travelled widely on the continent, which provided subject material. His Fulham by Moonlight, a typical example of 1949, is illustrated in Herbert Read’s Contemporary British Art, 1951. Taught at Ravensbourne College of Art, lived in London. Sometimes signed work F Bateson Mason.
