Artist in all painting media, draughtsman, film-maker, teacher and writer, born near Bristol. He studied at West of England College of Art, Bristol, with George Sweet, 1942–4 and 1948–52, with Army service intervening; then in 1952–4 at Slade School of Fine Art under Claude Rogers and William Coldstream. Several teaching appointments included a senior lectureship in fine art department of Leeds University. It holds his work. Jones wrote a book Wonders of the Stereoscope and made several Arts Council/Arts Foundation films, including Claes Oldenburg hanging a picture and Matisse: A sort of Paradise. He was president of Leeds Fine Art Club and a member of RWA. Also showed with LG and had solo shows in Buenos Aires in Argentina, in Harrogate and Leeds, where he lived.
