Versatile artist who studied at Brighton School of Art, 1977–8, then gained an honours degree in fine art, 1978–82, and higher diploma in painting, 1982–4, from Slade School of Fine Art. Awards included a Boise Travelling Scholarship, 1984, and an Italian Government Scholarship, 1985. In 1986 she co-founded Culford Press. Residencies included Spode’s ceramic factory in Staffordshire, 1998. Pattern was important in Hodes’ work, its creation using drawing, photography, collage, the computer and hoarded objects such as fabrics and postcards. She reckoned “the most exciting paintings are the ones which feel as if they only just hold together.” Hodes took part in many group shows, solo exhibitions including the Eagle Gallery from 1992.
