Painter of landscape and portraits and teacher, born in Darlington, Yorkshire. Binney Gibbs was educated at Liverpool North-West School of Art and Liverpool University before studying briefly in London. Although he was early on quite successful as a painter living in Manchester and then at Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire, for a time he was art master at New Mills. In 1910 he moved to Whistler’s old studio in Chelsea and began to concentrate on portraits, having shown several family portraits at RA. Also showed at IS and Paris Salon. In 1939 he settled in Stunts Green, Sussex, where he continued to paint local people and landscapes. Jeremy Wood Fine Art, Cranleigh, had a show of his work in 1975.
