Artist in various media, film and stage designer. Born at Ightham, Kent, he studied under Henry Tonks at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1920–4, after education at Eton College. Exhibited at the Leicester and Berkeley Galleries and the Salon d’Automne, Paris. The Imperial War Museum holds his work. Furse was principally known as a theatrical designer, of settings and costumes. He had to his credit dozens of productions at major London theatres, such as the Old Vic, Lyric and Haymarket, plus provincial and foreign venues. He also designed costumes and armour for Laurence Olivier’s film Henry V, in 1944, plus other notable films such as Odd Man Out, Spartacus and The Roman Spring of Mrs Stone. Lived in London.
