Landscape painter and teacher, born in Penn, Buckinghamshire, nephew of the painter Spencer Gore and married to artist Flavia Irwin. Was at Chelsea School of Art, 1936–9 and again 1946–7, his teachers including Ceri Richards, Robert Medley and Raymond Coxon. His time at Chelsea was divided with Army service in World War II. Taught at King’s College, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1947–54, then until 1973 at Royal College of Art, when he became principal of City and Guilds of London Art School. From 1984–93 he was president of the RA, having been elected in 1969 and treasurer for a time. He showed at RA and New Art Centre, having had his first one-man exhibition at Agnew, 1954. De Grey’s landscapes, near his studio in Kent or house in the Charente Maritime, France, were quiet in colour and orderly in construction and were given a memorial show at RA in 1996.
