Largely self-taught painter of strongly coloured landscapes, who grew up near Crossgar, County Down, Northern Ireland, and began painting from an early age. He went to university at Queen’s in Belfast, York and London. Until 1978 lectured for several years, then decided to go professional after a successful first exhibition. Tom Carr, J Humbert Craig and Frank McKelvey influenced Cunningham’s style. Showed at Tom Cromie Gallery and The Eakin Gallery, Belfast, and in Dublin at Oriel Gallery and Combridge Fine Arts. In 1996 Felix Rosenstiel’s published four Cunningham paintings as prints, which were also released as cards and calendars.
