Painter, born in Lanarkshire. He studied at Glasgow School of Art, 1943–50, excluding war service, 1944–8, then was a senior lecturer there, 1967–85, retiring to paint full-time. Cunningham was elected to Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1980 and won the Torrance Award as well as the MacFarlane, Cargill and Scottish Amicable Awards. He showed in group exhibitions at RSA, Flying Colours Gallery and Portland Gallery. Glasgow Art Club gave Cunningham a seventieth-birthday retrospective in 1996. Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Hunterian Gallery and University of Glasgow hold his work, which was in the Scottish Colourist tradition. Died in Glasgow.
