Painter, teacher and administrator, born in London, husband of the artist Felicity Charlton and brother of George. He studied at London University, 1923–7, then at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1930–3. Began teaching in Bristol in 1935 and became head of Cardiff School of Art, 1938–45, being a war artist during World War II. From 1945–66 he was an Her Majesty’s Inspector for art in Wales. Charlton took part in a number of group exhibitions, mainly in Wales, including SWG, Royal National Eisteddfod, WAC and National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth. He had a series of solo shows, including Welsh Gallery, Abergavenny, 1973. Charlton’s work can have a slightly Surrealist quality, as in Promenade Restaurant, held by Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea.
