Painter, especially of ships and the sea, who raced a Victory class one design yacht, born and brought up in Portsmouth area. As a boy he began drawing and modelling ships. With the help of marine artist W L Wyllie’s daughter, who gave Bishop over 50 of her father’s brushes, and that of marine artist Richard Joicey, Bishop showed successfully at RSMA. In 1980 the family firm was sold and Bishop began painting full-time, at first in watercolour. Early commissions came from naval officers needing portraits of their ships, and Bishop’s pictures proved especially popular in America, where he supplied the Quester Gallery, Stonington, Connecticut. Bishop had a solo show at Royal Exchange Gallery, 1991. The Mary Rose Trust asked him to paint several versions of the ship; the Royal Naval Museum a scene from the Battle of Jutland; and he produced company calendars for John Courage Brewery and Chichester Press.
