British sculptor, born in Northampton. He studied (mainly part-time) at Northampton School of Art, 1933–44, whilst working at various jobs including engineering and printing. After the Second World War he moved to London, where he taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1949–60. His mature work was completely abstract and he was regarded as one of the leading British exponents of *Constructivism, alongside Anthony *Hill, Kenneth and Mary *Martin, and Victor *Pasmore.
